Reported Santa Cruz Drive-by Shooting was a Gang Fight

Police responded to reports of a drive-by shooting this morning, but no shots were fired.

A little after 9:30 a.m. this morning Santa Cruz Police rushed to reports of a drive-by shooting in the area around Ocean Street and Washburn Avenue.

According to Santa Cruz Police Sgt. Jon Bush, a gang related fight took place, sending one 16-year-old San Jose male to the hospital, but no firearms were involved.

The fight occurred after a group from outisde the Santa Cruz area, including the 16-year-old, were challenged by suspected gang members over their clothing and colors.

According to police, a fight fight between six to eight people ensued. At some point an object was thrown against a wall making a loud noise that witnesses to the brawl thought to be gunfire.

The hospitilzed youth and his companions are not known to have gang affiliations at this time, but according to Sgt. Bush, that perception led to the confrontation and fight.
