Photos and Video: "Thrill the World"

A group of zombies reenacts the infamous dance from Michael Jackson's hit music video 'Thriller' in the streets of downtown Santa Cruz on Saturday afternoon.

The creepiest and scariest holiday of the year is still four days away, but don’t’ tell that to a large group of zombies who flooded Cooper Street in downtown Santa Cruz on Saturday afternoon.

“Thrill the World” is an international event that brings both hardcore and moderate fans of the mega hit “Thriller” by Michael Jackson to reenact the popular music video in the streets of cities worldwide.

Carlo Albano, 27, is a 5th grade teacher at Live Oak Elementary School and he was all dressed up in the infamous red jacket and cap the King of Pop wore on the big stage.

“It’s fun and it’s a good community event,” he said. “We’re teaching it to our fifth graders also for our Halloween parade.”

As for Nicole Mattacola, it took her around an hour to get into her costume and explained why she wanted to get in on the action on Saturday.

“Just wanted to shake the dust off these old bones,” said Mattacola.

Some of the youngsters also took part in some of the fun and Grace Laurin, 8, from the San Lorenzo Valley area was one of the many to have fun. When asked what was her favorite song, she simply answered, “Thriller.”
