Once upon a time the world's greatest R & R band....now....well, let's just say the Stones areRead More another sad example of what happens when greed trumps musicianship and respect for fans....

Let us not forget to mention all, and I mean ALL the movies and FX people who have been inspired byRead More Harryhausen's work. Off the top of my head Lucas and Tim Burton owe Harryhausen a lot

I added a few more links to the story this morning, including the TV open for the originalRead More "Creature Features". That'll take you WAY back. ;)
Tony James May 8, 2013 at 01:06 am
Ray Harryhausen will be missed. Whenever Creature Features played one of his movies, it was the talkRead More of the school yard all week. It would suck if you were one of the kids that missed it or your parents wouldn't let you stay up to watch it. RIP

Did this field trip make you think about stereotypes? I love that awakening of understanding thatRead More occurs when someone behaves in ways that aren't what I expected. I bet just as you were thinking positive thoughts about the people you met being friendly they were thinking the same thing about you.

License plate recording systems, surveillance cameras, armed vigilantes ... sounds like paradise toRead More me.

Best article I have seen for a long time! Not that worn out "laid back in paradise ";Read More while sipping booze and bringing rose-colored-glasses back to one's nose.

Raid the homeless camps daily, with force. There is no reason not to flush the crap out other thanRead More apathy. Don't put cameras up, that's not going to help and will upset people who are law abiding and actually live here. Capitola is a prime example of changing how the locals view an area, most of my peers don't even go there any more. If you or anyone else is recording more than your own property, your breaking the law, and this needs to be addressed. Personal accountability needs to be allowed, not frowned upon. "Just call the cops", bull pucky, protect your neighbors, family and friends. Close the homeless shelter and turn it into a community outreach to put people to work so they can rent and pay taxes. Install washers and dryers, showers and job placement reps. Allow for concealed carry permits so that when something violent does happen there are more upstanding, and clearly law abiding citizens (they follow the law to legally obtain a fire arm and carry it) can help protect the community and assist the overwhelmed law enforcement.

No I would not. I saw them at Candlestick and they were "OK" in '81. Would have loved toRead More have see them with Mick Taylor on guitar. They would be a great Summer series Santa Cruz Boardwalk show these days.
Colleen Clark April 4, 2013 at 04:15 pm
I saw them in 65 and they were worth the $15.00 tickets then and I am not sure I'd pay $400.00 bucksRead More today..but they were awesome in 65….and still are…Enjoy to those who will pay $7000.00 for a ticket~!~~~

I like the sound of James' new music and believe he has shown significant growth between his debutRead More album and his second. But to say he was "the real winner of his season of 'American Idol'" is disingenuous. He faltered down the stretch compared to the other finalists.
Debbie Hayes March 29, 2013 at 06:11 am
He is such an attractive and lovely young man, tho I am old enough to be his grandmother I stillRead More feel so passionate about James Durbin and his sexy hair and rock music. Makes me feel young again!
Kathy Smith March 26, 2013 at 07:40 pm
This show was exceptional, James is a natural on stage and shines with the brightest stars. I amRead More proud to say I was hooked and reeled in from the first notes sang during Idol auditions. As a life long lover of a variety of music I can safely say I see nothing but great things in this young man's future. He had me first as a singer, soon thereafter as a performer and now as James DURBIN, singer, song writer, performer and artist. He continues to grow and push himself toward stardom and I am proud to be Right Behind him all the way.

Tsk, tsk, tsk. You left out the word communist, and you also neglected to blame President Obama.

Hi Robert. Thanks for your comment and for your advice on querying and my letter. You're probablyRead More right about the reviews. It's difficult because it sounds so nice (to my ears, anyway.) :-) But a little cutting is probably a good idea. Appreciate you stopping by!
Robert Young May 5, 2013 at 01:22 pm
I'd suggest querying agents and publishers concurrently. It will be much easier to land an agent ifRead More you have a pub interested in your work ( = you've done a big part of the agent's work). Why, you ask, turn it over to an agent after you've done this work? For future projects. Enjoyed the query. Sounds like an interesting project. I'd cut back on the reviews a bit and limit it to one page. Good luck! Robert Young www.realwriting.us

"Following the lead of Pacifica and So Cal Surfrider Foundation - who has banned smoking on 30Read More Southern California beaches" "Surfrider" banned smoking on 30 Southern California beaches? They did nothing of the sort. Perhaps they are happy about it (works for me), but please do not give credit to them for something they did not do.

David, it's so true. I was out there on 4/20 picking up trash on the Pacifica beach for Earth Day.Read More We picked up bags and bags of trash. Half of what we picked up was cigarette butts. It was pretty gross. Maybe smokers could repurpose doggie doo bags, which are usually available in public spaces, as temporary cigarette butt holders.

I love the idea of mixing in some veggies, herbs etc. with the ornamentals. I haven't done it muchRead More in my front yard, because i have a little kitchen garden in back (most summers) ... but I've seen lots of gardens where this is done to great effect. I agree, this is a town of talented, inspired, dedicated gardeners .. and some incredible nurseries to give us our horticultural fix.
Brad Kava (Editor) May 1, 2013 at 03:20 pm
Awesome column cynthia. What do you think of growing food out there? I've been shooting pictures ofRead More gardens around town and realized we have more color and exotics right in our front lawns than you would see when you pay to go to a botanical garden in a town you are visiting.
