After spending time with the founders, another thing I learned about local business The Penny is that it also played to the strengths of its home market, Santa Cruz County. The business strategist Michael Porter developed a rigorous framework for examining regional advantage in his book ‘The Competitive Advantage of Nations’. This framework looks at the particular condition of factors (inputs), the sophistication of demand, complimentary industries, and the way firms compete. It turns out that Santa Cruz as a region is highly competitive in the artisanal foods industry.
