The time is running out to experience a day sailing on the Monterey Bay while helping children in Santa Cruz achieve their highest potential. On Sunday, September 1, the Santa Cruz Yacht Club and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Santa Cruz County are partnering for the Day On The Monterey Bay, to give local residents a chance to get out on the ocean while helping a valuable local community organization.
This is the 22nd year the Santa Cruz Yacht Club has partnered with Big Brothers Big Sisters to raise funds and let community members experience the joy of sailing. This event, which is a major fund-raiser for the Big Brothers Big Sisters mentoring program, gives anyone a chance to spend an afternoon aboard the Chardonnay II, a 70-foot ultra-light sailing yacht. Watch the sailboat races up close, and after the races enjoy a BBQ dinner with live music ashore at the Santa Cruz Yacht Club. Look for the balloons. The cost for both is only $55. Local boaters can also join in with a reverse start regatta scheduled to begin at 1pm.
“Since the Yacht Club first partnered with Big Brothers Big Sisters in 1992, this annual event has raised more than $750,000,” said Rob Schuyler, Commodore for the club. “We’re proud of the impact we’ve had in helping this great local organization make a difference in the lives of our local youth.”
The Yacht Club has been a part of the Santa Cruz community for 85 years. Since 1928, the club, which has more than 650 members, has been encouraging and supporting yachting, through events for local boaters.
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Santa Cruz County has been mentoring our local youth for 31 years. National research and local evaluation show it works. 91% of parents report their child’s self confidence has increased after being in the Big Brothers Big Sisters program, and 96% say their child’s grades improved and that they get along better with other children.
