Santa Cruz Community Comes Together to Celebrate Gay Pride

Santa Cruz’s 39th Annual Pride Parade and Festival was a giant party for locals but also brought in people from San Jose which no longer has a pride parade. “At least Santa Cruz still has a pride parade” said an extravagant man dressed from head to toe in Princess attire , who came from San Jose to enjoy the festivities.

The colorful event was one for people of all ages to enjoy as well as show their support for the LGBTQ community. Ron Smith is a 73 year old San Josean, has experienced all types of pride parades and stated, “I enjoy the Santa Cruz parade because it’s more locally based and I can connect with more people. The San Francisco parade is filled with people from all over the country so it’s harder to meet local people of the community.”

The festival had a somewhat mellow vibe throughout the street which ended in a not so mellow vibrant dance party. The parade was a positive experience, said a couple at Peete's coffee.

“It’s a great opportunity for us to show our support to the gay community."
