Bike On! Annual Fest Begins Friday With Chockful Week of Two-Wheel Events

Santa Cruz County’s Annual Bike Week kicks off its 27th year on Friday --May 2 -- and runs through May 9.

Every year more than 12,000 enthusiastic children, families and adults join in community bike rides, free bike mechanic workshops, discounts at local restaurants and family friendly art projects and activities in a week-long effort coordinated by Ecology Action.

Held during National Bike Month, this week's highlights in Santa Cruz County include:
  • May 2: First Friday at the Museum of Modern Art featuring local bike-themed art, family friendly activities, crafts and art for sale, live music and pedal-powered margaritas. Join the over 1,500 for this event.
  • May 5: Cycle & Dine, a brand new program this year where cyclists can receive a discount on their meal from local restaurants including Charlie Hong Kong, Midtown Café, Harbor Café, and Chocolate!
  • May 7: Free workshop at Epicenter Cycling at 1730 Mission St, Santa Cruz which will include everything you need to know about commuting by bike. Free commuter gear giveaways and a panel discussion from local bike commuters.
  • May 9: Santa Cruz Bike Party at 703 Pacific Ave from 7-9pm. SC Bike Party is a fun, family-friendly social ride that happens once a month. The theme for this Bike Party is (Bike) Empire Strikes Back, so polish off those light sabers or just come down to join the fun. Will be a mellow bike route around town.

For Bike to Work and School Day, Thursday, May 8, there will be 15 public breakfast sites throughout Santa Cruz County, where bike commuters can receive free breakfast, basic bike maintenance, and more.

“Bike Week has become a valued community event which directly addresses climate change and childhood obesity, both challenges that face our community, by providing fun, inclusive and informative bicycle-related activities and positive incentives for all ages,” stated Emily Glanville, Program Specialist of Ecology Action.
