'Blue Plaque' Awards Given to 9 Historical Buildings in Santa Cruz

The Santa Cruz Museum of Art & History presented nine building rich in history with “Blue Plaque” Historic Landmark Awards this weekend.

The presentations -- made during National Historic Preservation Month -- continues a tradition begun in 1973, and now more than 200 of the familiar, blue, oval markers have been awarded countywide.

To qualify for the award, structures must be at least 50 years old, located within Santa Cruz County, and associated with a person or event of historical significance. The plaques displayed on building exteriors alert passersby that deeper stories exist—not only about the structure, but of lifestyles and neighborhood character, meaningful events, and personal experiences.
