Get Out in Santa Cruz: Red Cross Fundraiser, Santa Cruz High Football and More

A Community-Wide Garage Sale will take place all weekend long in Santa Cruz.

Where/When: , 1 Chaminade Ln, Santa Cruz, CA. Friday, 5:30 p.m. 

Why Go: The Santa Cruz County Chapter of the American Red Cross is holding "Celebrate the Red",113 years of Red Cross in Santa Cruz County Fundraiser this Friday night. The event will feature local wines and a silent and live aution, accompanied by jazz music. The Master of Ceremonies will be Terry Medina, former police Cheif of Watsonville. All proceeds from this event will help ensure the continuation of local Red Cross Services.

Why Go: Join Natural Chef Jennifer for a monthly hands-on cooking class showcasing recipes from a different health-focused cookbook each month. Class includes discussion about the book’s eating philosophy, cooking tips and techniques, plus, in each class you will prepare a five-course tasting menu from the book's best recipes.  This month's feature is "The Natural Gourmet" by Annemarie Colbin. Class fee includes cookbook.

Where/When: Sale sites will be posted all across the city. Saturday and Sunday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. 

Why Go: Residents in the City and County of Santa Cruz are having garage sales at their homes during the Garage Sale Weekend. Where/When: 301 Center St, Santa Cruz, CA. Saturday, 1:30 p.m. 

Why Go: Mystery writer, Laurie R. King, and Santa Cruz County Poet Laureate, Gary Young, will reflect on Edgar Allan Poe’s writing. Brent Gifford, a local magician, will talk about the psychology of Poe, and John Moir, author of The Return of the Condor, will share the way Poe wrote about birds in his work. Learn about opportunities to join discussion groups and participate in a writing contest. Everyone is invited to this free event.  So, what is your favorite piece of Poe?

Where/When: San Lorenzo Valley High School. Highway 9, Felton, CA. Saturday, 2 p.m. 

Why Go: The Santa Cruz High football team begins Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League play this Saturday at San Lorenzo Valley High in Felton. SLV (1-3) won the league last fall, but struggled mightly in the pre-season. Santa Cruz comes into the game winners of three of four, including a convincing 40-14 victory over No. Salinas Friday night. Kick-off is set for 2 p.m. on Saturday afternoon.
