Get Out in Santa Cruz: Scheherazade, the Banana Slug String Band and More

A concert at the beach, a string band saluting some local critters, and a job summit are all on the docket this week in Santa Cruz.

Where/When: Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk, Friday, 6:30 pm and 8:30 pm. 

Why Go: The Edgar Winter Band will hit the stage for a pair of shows and perform such hits as "Frankenstein" and "They Only Come Out at Night" for the beachgoers in attendance. Formed in late 1972, the band has been touring for four decades and is still going strong.

Where/When: Roaring Camp Railroads, 5355 Graham Hill Rd., Felton, CA 95018, Friday, Saturday, Sunday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Why Go: Enjoy the scenic Santa Cruz Mountains with the family and light up their eyes with the appearance of the popular children's television character Thomas the Train. The unique weekend escape is just up the road and is a great midday adventure for the entire family.

Where/When: Workforce Santa Cruz County Career Center, 2045 40th Ave, Capitola, CA, Thursday, 3 pm to 4 pm. 

Why Go: Learn the “ins and outs” of applying for jobs with UC Santa Cruz. A representative of the University will explain the application process and answer questions. In this economy, any chance you get to network and learn more about possible job openings, the better.

Where/When: Museum of Natural History-Santa Cruz, 1305 E. Cliff Drive, Saturday, 10 am to 1 pm. 

Why Go: Local favorite, the Banana Slug String Band, will hit the stage for a fun-filled performance highlighting the animals in the temporary exhibit: Endangered Neighbors. The band will perform a 10:30 am and 12:00 pm show for all museum patrons. 

Pricing: $4 general, $2 seniors and free for members and youth under 18. 

Where/When: Louden Nelson Community Center, 301 Center St., Santa Cruz, Friday, 7 pm to 9 pm. 

Why Go: The Summer Children's Theatre present this persian tale of one thousand and one nights featuring the main character, Scheherazade, who later becomes a queen. The eventual queens gift for storytelling keeps her alive in this classic story.
