Get Out in Santa Cruz: Surf Party, Hawaiian Luau, and More

This week in Santa Cruz, enjoy a contemporary music festival, attend a week-long food and science camp, and rally to save the Santa Cruz County Fairgrounds.

Why Go: The Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music hosts some of the most critically acclaimed presenters of contemporary music in the nation. During the first two weeks of August each year, audiences are joined by both preeminent and emerging composers, renowned guest artists, and an orchestra of dedicated professional musicians led by famed conductor Marin Alsop.

Why Go: Come out and show your support to save the Santa Cruz County Fairgrounds. Join radio personalities, local officials and candidates for office for a good cause!

Where/When: , 120 Union St., Saturday, 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Why Go: Dust off your grass skirts, polish that coconut bra and bring your ukulele for an evening of Hawaiian entertainment. Talented singer and dancer Kalae "Bobo" Miles will be on hand to sing, dance and entertain you with traditional Hawaiian rhythms. Pono Island Grill will be offering a special $10 Teriyaki Bowl with some proceeds going to the Diversity Center as well as their full menu.

Pricing: Free, although a donation of $8 to benefit the Santa Cruz Diversity Center is requested at the door

Where/When: 800 Quail Hollow Rd, Felton, CA 95018, Aug. 15-19, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Why Go: Calling all budding chefs and food fans! Spend a whole week cooking with popular science and cooking instructor, Phyllis Endicott. Enjoy hands-on activities as your prepare a variety of entrees, deserts, and drinks, using fresh local ingredients. In addition, options for those with allergies, diabetes, or other food related issues will be included. For ages 8 and up.

Pricing: $125 for residents and $138 for non-residents (not including materials fee of $100 due on the first day)
