Great Escape

Free admission, free massages, half-off pool, extended happy hour menu and raffle prizes at Mom's Night Out this Thursday.

Your teens are holding a car wash at the high school Saturday. The grandparents volunteered to take the younger children to a movie Sunday afternoon. Your 'tweens take tap on Wednesday evening. It’s your time. Take it.

Each week, we’ll tell you about one great idea to give you a much-deserved break and make your life a little easier, maybe a whole lot easier.

On Thursday, from 5-8 p.m., moms throughout Santa Cruz County are invited to Surf City Billiards in Santa Cruz as part of the first “Mom’s Night Out.”

Admission is free and includes 50 percent off pool, a happy hour menu for the entire event, free massages from Niki Cope of Skin FX and a prize raffle to benefit 3PENS, a coalition of nonprofit, parent cooperative preschools.

Surf City Billiards is at 931 Pacific Ave., Santa Cruz. For more information, you can call Shiri Gradek, Mom’s Night Out event planner and preschool parent, at 831-359-7130, or e-mail gradek.events@gmail.com.

Playdates with other moms are fun, but a night away from your kids will give you a chance to relax and, maybe, finish a sentence.

“I really love going out," Gradek said, "but avoid many of the bars and clubs I used to go to pre-family. The dive bar scene is just not cute anymore. Surf City Billiards is a more upscale venue that has a mature menu for food and drinks.”

If you can't make it Thursday, take some time for yourself by stopping in at for a taste of delight and a bite of gourmet.
