Santa Cruz MAH History Forum Doubles Amount of Dolkas Award Research Grant
$2K grant is offered for Monterey Bay Region history project.
Researchers, genealogists, oral historians, journalists and others working on a project about the history of the Monterey Bay Region are invited to apply for a $2,000 Dolkas Award, given by the MAH History Forum.
The James Dolkas History Award is an annual competitive grant that provides a financial award for original projects to promote the understanding of history in the Santa Cruz/Monterey Bay area.
On doubling the amount of the award, History Forum President Traci Bliss says, “We are pleased to be able to support quality projects at this new level.”
These projects may encompass original research, publications, preservation work, and other projects that constitute significant contributions to the understanding of local history.
Dr. Bliss, an emeriti professor, will hold a free workshop on writing the proposal: May 3, 12 noon in the MAH Archives Room.
Randall Brown, Dolkas Award winner from 2012 will share his proposal at that time.
The endowment fund was established in honor of James Dolkas, who died in April 2001.
Dolkas was the founder and original president of the History Forum, a membership affiliate support group of The Museum of Art & History.
Recent awardees include:
- 2012 - Randall Brown for his research on Josephine Clifford McCrackin
- 2011 - Alverda Orlando for documentary work on North Coast farmers; Nicholas Barron for research on systematic bias in federal recognition of Native American groups in the Monterey Bay region
- 2010 - Maureen Davidson for her research on the history of murals throughout Santa Cruz County
- 2009 - Barry Brown for his work on the California Powder Works, Santa Cruz County, 1861-1914
Applications and narratives may be submitted to the museum at any time, but no later than Sept. 1, 2014.
The recipient or recipients will be notified in October and honored on Nov. 19 at the History Forum’s annual awards dinner.
