The eight members of Oakland's Brass Magic were on their way to play a gig at Moe's Alley, when they decided to put on a free show downtown.

Crowds thronged to hear what may have been the best street musicians ever...or at least, they were among them.

They open for Brooklyn's Zongo Junction at 8 p.m. tonight.

Yes, I got to hear them! They were great! For me, that's one of the biggest attractions of downtown, the fact that you can hear live music at almost any random time. Just take a stroll (or a pedicab), and you're bound to come across at least a couple of buskers playing anything from jazz to bluegrass, klezmer to samba, folk to classical, or many even some high energy funky horns like Brass Magic. What a fabulous and vibrant town we live in! Incidentally, weren't these guys technically in violation of some silly new ordinance?

That was my first thought as well. What about the ordinance?
