Photo of the Day: Summer in January, With a View of Loma Prieta

The Giant Dipper and Loma Prieta
The Giant Dipper and Loma Prieta
It doesn't get much clearer in Santa Cruz than it was Tuesday.

There's a song by the band Cracker which talks about seeing San Jose from the Giant Dipper. You sure could, even not on the coaster. You could see the antennae on Loma Prieta.

Maybe they should open the Boardwalk early?

Umunhum (Ohlone Indian word) means "resting place of the hummingbird". Also, that's not Mt. Umunhum in this photo. It's Mt. Loma Prieta. Mt. Umunhum was not a missile warning site... it was a Cold War long range radar station for air surveillance against enemy bombers. Missile detection was (and still is) done via defense satellites.

:-) Perfectly OK if you want to delete the comment stream to start it fresh.

Wait, what? Loma Prieta is not in San Jose.
Mount Umunhum January 15, 2014 at 10:20 AM
@Steve Premo: Technically, no... it's in "unincorporated Santa Clara County".

Nah, I can live with my mistakes...I didn't delete comments, but it looks like they are gone?
