Remember when Santa Cruz didn't want chain stores, thinking they would kill local business?
Nothing has been further from the truth in the coffee biz, at least. Starbucks didn't put locals under, even though it picked a location across from the longstanding Santa Cruz Coffee Roasting Company. Since it's opened, others have followed, including the popular Verve and Peets.
They are working 24 hours a day to remodel the Pacific Avenue Starbucks (once a German deli and also the site of the start of motorcycle gang turf wars. Only in Santa Cruz could gangs fight over lattes.)
