'Project Homeless Connect' Day Set May 20 In Santa Cruz

Volunteers needed to help run the event modeled after a program started in 2004 in San Francisco.

Project Homeless Connect, a one day community-wide event, is set for May 20 at the Kaiser Permanente Arena in Santa Cruz.

The event provides housing support and quality-of-life resources to individuals experiencing homelessness in the community.

Another PHC event is planned for Watsonville on Nov. 5.

Project Homeless Connect originated in San Francisco in 2004 when Mayor Gavin Newsom challenged his county workers to create a better system of care for the homeless community.

The one-day service model they created proved extremely effective and since its inception, Project Homeless Connect has spread to more than 220 cities in three different countries.
