UPDATE: Santa Cruz Diner Cuts Back to 24 Hours Three Days a Week; Open Until 11 p.m. the Other Nights
The diner has just cut back hours but will be open every day.
Santa Cruz Diner, open 24 hours a day since 2008, has cut back its hours to 24 hours only Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Sunday through Thursday it will open 6 a.m. to 11 p.m.
Owner Chip Kirchner said they were losing money overnights on the other four nights. "It used to be 168 hours a week, now it's 120 or whatever," he said. A night manager told Patch it was closed the other days, but it's not.
Filled with fun signs that were a tribute to the history of the city, the diner on Ocean Street is a staple for locals, especially late nights. It also offers the most diverse menu in town, with traditional dinner specials such as roast beef and a Vietnamese menu, since one of the owners hails from that country.
It has vegan items and local seafood dinners for around $10.
It was also one of only three restaurants open 24 hours a day. The others are Jeffrey's on Soquel Drive and Denny's, also on Ocean.
Here's what Food Network viewers say about it.
