Slide Show: Carless in Santa Cruz: Open Streets Brings Out Alternatives

The line most heard Sunday: "They should do this every week."

No timbers shivered on a sunny day along West Cliff Drive Sunday.
No timbers shivered on a sunny day along West Cliff Drive Sunday.
For the second time, Santa Cruz closed a section of West Cliff Drive to cars from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and crowds came in droves to enjoy the scenic road without choking fumes and deafening motorcycles.

Bike stores led processions to the event, to encourage those who might not want to bike there alone. Others rode themselves from all over, passing other cyclists with the greeting, "Happy Open Streets Day."

There was music, food, bike information, a climbing wall and people on wheels of all kinds.

Such a fantastic event! I agree it should be more often--maybe once a month if not once a week!

It is wonderful that we enjoyed a second annual Santa Cruz Open Streets, Sunday, Oct. 13 on West Cliff Drive. While many people would love a monthly, or weekly event of this type, neighborhood associations, permitting and working with dozens of organizations and businesses make it too complex to host more often. Here are my photos from public Facebook album. I loved taking these: https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.526283424116063.1073741826.341300629281011&type=1&l=57f122f081
