SmoQe BBQ in Aptos Closed its Doors Sunday

Customers paid in cash for a last chance at what was left: brisket, pulled pork, cole slaw and salads.

Despite winning chilis in October's Santa Cruz Chili Cookoff, SmoQe BBQ in Aptos closed its doors Sunday night.

One of the last remaining chefs said the 3-year-old restaurant lost too much in its first year—some $200,000—to make it up despite its recent successes. He said he hoped to find a way to reopen the restaurant which served wood-fired pizza as well as barbeque.

It October's Sausage Festival in Santa Cruz's Westside and had lines out the door on weekends and week nights. It also Aracelly Clouse as a place that was perfect for meat eaters and vegetarians.
