Teams from All Over...and Santa Cruz's Mayor....Take a Polar Plunge Saturday

The dive into the chilly waters of Monterey Bay helped raise money and spirit for Special Olympics.

"Can you believe this?" asked Santa Cruz Mayor Hilary Bryant, stepping out of the 51 degree Monterey Bay, which was its usual mean winter self. Like all these plungers, she spurned the wetsuit Saturday.

"My first volunteer job was working for Special Olympics," she told the crowd. "It's important."

And she plunged above and beyond the call of Mayoral duties.

So did a team from some East Bay Patch cities, a team from Coca-Cola,  and others from law enforcement, including Scotts Valley Lt. John Hohmann and Santa Cruz Lt. Colleen McMahon.
