Traffic Alert: Delays, Closures Near UCSC, Bay & High Through This Evening

Student protest is underway at the university.

The intersection of Bay Drive and High Street is closed to vehicular traffic today -- Wednesday -- due to a strike by students at the University California, Santa Cruz, according to police.

Due to the protest, said the Santa Cruz Police Department, there will be traffic delays in the area, and the following intersections will be closed with traffic diverted:

  •  N/B Bay @ High Street.
  • W/B High St. @ Cardiff Place.
  • E/B High St. @ Western Drive.
The protest is expected to continue until early evening, police said.

The strikers are mostly UCSC graduate student employees, represented by the United Auto Workers union, protesting unfair labor practices and intimidation of workers.

Strikes are also underway at UC Berkeley, UC San Diego, and UC Davis.
