Wednesday Vigil Planned for 'Red Horse Chestnut Tree on Death Row'

Save Our Big Trees, a grassroots effort focused on sparing Santa Cruz area trees from development, is planning a vigil Wednesday from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the site of a 110-year-old Red Horse Chestnut tree at 407 Broadway.

The group is concerned that the tree will be chopped down to make way for a new hotel project.

"The vote of six council members last Tuesday to give a $2 million windfall of TOT taxes back to hotels of 100 beds or more is probably the final piece of funding that will allow the 407 Broadway Hyatt to go ahead," writes Save Our Big Trees organizer Gillian. "Expect the tree to be cut down sooner rather than later."
