Cheer for James Durbin and Other Things for Kids This Week in Santa Cruz

Let your kids watch James Durbin on American Idol with their friends, get out and enjoy nature and the ourdoors and get some tips about a summer camp — all possibilities outlined for you in this week's Santa Cruz Kids Planner.

Why Go:  He's still on a roll, so we have to continue to tell you to be there. Santa Cruz's James Durbin is now among the Final Six contenders to be the next American Idol. This Wednesday night James Durbin will be up again. So why not go to American Idol night at the Teen Center and watch James  with your friends.  Can you imagine what will happen if James Durbin wins??  Let's see what James does in this week's performance.

Why Go: The Santa Cruz Tree Trust, along with the City of Santa Cruz is celebrating Earth Day and Arbor Day by doing what it does best, planting some trees. And you and your children are invited to be there, too to plant a tree or two of your own. The trust will provide the digging and planting tools — you just need to show up. Even the really young ones will be entertained at the "Tree Nursery."

Where/When:  Rancho del Oso, 3600 Highway 1, Davenport, Saturday, Sunday, 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Why Go: If you are going as a family, head out on Sunday. That's when the walk is more kid-friendly. And of course by designating Sunday as the family day, it means other parents with their kids will be there, too.  You and your children will delight in the wildflowers that are blooming now. You’ll see buttercups, shooting stars and more.

Where/When:  Santa Cruz Dance Company, 2800 Porter St, Soquel, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday; also at Pacific Motion in Santa Cruz35-

Why Go:  It's dance week throughout northern California, but the kids are not being forgotten either.  Free dance classes for children are being offered at Santa Cruz Dance Company between 3:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday and also at Pacific Motion in Santa Cruz.  Your kids can try out ballet, hip hop, jazz and more.

Where/When:, 3400 N Main St, Soquel, Thursday, 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Why Go: You and your kids have a great opportunity to learn about summer camp opportunities and have dinner out.  Steve and Kate's camp has a unique approach so it's worth your while to learn about it. Campers choose activities; parents buy days and use them anytime. And what's offered is everything from filmmaking, culinary arts and sewing to bungee jumping, bumper cars and basketball.
