Map Your Personal History, Taste the Best Clam Chowder, See a James Baldwin Play and Hear Reggae

The Boardwalk will offer more than just rides this Saturday and there's a host of other events to look out for this weekend

Cost:  $5 general; $3 students and seniors; free for 12 and under

Why go:  Do you have any secrets about Santa Cruz that some may find fascinating? Now you can share untold stories with others and help recreate history by being a part of a ‘work in progress’ exhibition, and contribute to the ‘building stories, secret spatial histories of Santa Cruz,’ workshop. A large concept map will be drawn out on the wall of the meeting space and used to record these ongoing gatherings. Coffee and snacks will be provided.

Where: UCSC Theatre Arts Main Stage

When: 7 p.m. 

Cost:  $15 general, $12 non UCSC students and seniors, No cover UCSC student with I.D.

Why go:  Novel writer James Baldwin of "Go tell it on the Mountain," has written his first play to be performed by The African-American Theatre Arts Troupe at UC Santa Cruz. Issues of racial prejudicism, religion and poverty will be addressed in this three-act play.

Cost:  $15/advance; $19/door 

Why go: This melodic reggae-rock band from Hawaii and later Isle Vista, CA, aims to soothe the spirit with their beach inspired musical lyrics and rhythm.

What: The 32rd Annual Clam Chowder Cook-Off

Where:  Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk

When:  10 a.m. to 5 p.m. 

Cost:  No cover. $9 tasting kit for five samples.

Why go: Taste the best clam chowder dozens of cooks can create.

 

What:  Dave Alvin and Marshall Crenshaw backed by the Guilty Ones

Where:  Moe's Alley

When: 9 p.m. Saturday

Cost: $20/$25 door

Why go: Two masters of Americana team up for a rare pairing.

 

What:  Santa Cruz Baroque Festival

Where:  Holy Cross Church

What:  Gretel Ehrlich will read from, "Facing the Wave"

Why go:  Hear the inspirational stories of the 2011 tsunami survivors of Japan's Tohoku's Coast. A collection of interviews from witnesses, reports, and the author's own reflection of the aftermath will be read aloud in narratives from the book.

 

What:  The 37th Annual Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour

Where:  Rio Theatre 

When:  7 p.m. (Fri.- Sun.)

Why go: See Canada's best adventure and enviromental films. Enthusiasts will need to hold onto their seats while viewing the action sports films of mountain biking, rock climbing, snowboarding and white water rafting.
