Get Out in Santa Cruz

Talks about online learning and the California condor, a school fundraiser, baroque music and a class about wine are just some of the offerings in and around Santa Cruz this weekend.

It's Thursday, and the weekend is approaching. Spring is approaching -- we know that because on Saturday night, we get to "spring forward" and set our clocks ahead. So we'll "lose an hour, but we will still want to find things to do for the weekend!

Patch has done some research for you. Here are our suggestions for some of the coolest things to do in and around Santa Cruz this weekend. So go ahead and "Get Out!"

Where/When , 400 Beach St. Thursday, 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Why Go:  The topic is Online Learning for the 21st Century and it's something we all need to know more about, given the way things are developing these days. Do you remember life before there was online? The speaker is Claire Schneeberger of Monarch Media. An added bonus — parking is free at the Cocoanut Grove-Beach Boardwalk!

Where/When   , 500 Harkins Slough Rd, Watsonville, CA 95076 (Fitz Wetlands Educational Resource Center at the top of the Pajaro Valley High School campus) Thursday, 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Why Go: Hear from environmental journalist John Moir about the current state of affairs for the California Condor and what you can do to help keep these species from becoming extinct.

Why Go: Have a lovely evening out and support Brook Knoll Elementary School. Cocktails, dinner, dancing and a live and silent auction. All proceeds go directly to TheBrook Knoll PTA to benefit our Brook Knoll students.

Pricing: $75.00 per person

Where/When: Music Center Recital Hall, UC Santa Cruz, 1156 High St. Saturday, 7:30 p.m. 

Why Go: Listen to some music from another time, from the 18th and 19th centuries — sounds of Dresden, Moscow, Paris and Vienna from that era.

Pricing: $3 to $23(unless you are a season ticket holder and have already purchased a season ticket).

Where/When: , 334 Ingalls St. Sunday, 12 p.m. to 2 p.m.

Why Go:  Learn something about wine from the master winemakers of the Surf City Vintners group of wineries. Do more than just sip wine, know what you are doing and learn to speak the language of wine. Sunday's class is with Michael Sones of Sones Cellars.

Pricing: $30, $25 for wine club members
