Get Out in Santa Cruz: Beer Brewing and "Bagging It"

A Santa Cruz artist is back in town, a class in beer brewing, a free beach concert, a documentary on the plastic bag takeover and an art stroll on the beach in neighboring Capitola; our suggestions to Get Out in and around Santa Cruz this weekend.

Where/When: , 320 Cedar St, Thursday, 8 p.m.

Why Go:It's not every night that one of Santa Cruz' own shows up at Kuumbwa. This night Santa Cruz native Bennett Jackson is home for a performance at this classic jazz center. He will be delivering a night of roadhouse country-rick with his Ranch Hands.

Pricing: Free

Where/When: , 400 Beach St, Santa Cruz, Friday, 6:30 p.m.

Why Go: This Friday night Great White of "Once Bitten, Twice Shy" fame is on the boardwalk this week as part of the Friday Night Bands summer series. An early bird show at 6:30 p.m., followed by another show two hours later. Head on down to the beach and listen to the music.

Where/When:: Love Apple Farms 2317 Vine Hill Rd, Sunday, 12 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Why Go: Ever get in the mood fo a cold one? Lots of times, certainly, but did you ever think you could learn to brew your own beer? Go to this special workshop and to learn how to do it from Dave Bossie. Bossie of Ben Lomond is long-time home brewer and award-winning beer maker. Brew beer in class and when class is over, you get to taste it!

Where/When: , 224 Church St. Saturday, 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Why Go: You may never look at a plastic bag in exactly the same way. This is a special screening of the award-winning environmental documentary Bag It as "everyman" Jeb Berrier follows the plastic bag trail. The City of Santa Cruz Public Works Department will give a brief presentation following the film about plastic reduction and recycling.

Pricing: Free

Where/When: , 209 Capitola Ave. (Esplanade Park) Sunday, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
