Grab and Go Kids Planner

Check out student dancers, sailboat races, monarch butterflies and a doubleheader high school basketball game—or make time to do an arts and crafts project.

 This is our new, weekly calendar of kid-friendly activities and places to try out with children and yes, even teens!  The idea is to offer you suggestions about things you can do as a family!

 Each week, we'll give you the info on five of the best family activities or events for the week.

FAMILY BEST BETS OF THE WEEK

STUDENT DANCERS: RANDOM WITH A PURPOSE

Where/When: UC-Santa Cruz campus, Theater Arts, Second Stage; Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m., Sunday at 3 p.m. 

Why Go: Student performances featuring contemporary, jazz, blues fusion, street, tap and hip-hop works. Something for everyone.

Pricing: $10-$11 for tickets

• WEDNESDAY NIGHT SAIL BOAT RACES

Where/When: , 135 Fifth Ave., Wednesday, 6:30-8 p.m. 

Why Go:  Need you ask? Sailboat racing and gorgeous sunsets every Wednesday evening at the Santa Cruz Harbor make for good outdoor family time. And breathe in that ocean air. 

Pricing:  Free 

• DOUBLEHEADER BASKETBALL: APTOS VS. HARBOR HIGH, GIRLS AND BOYS!

Where/When: , 100 Mariner Way, Aptos, Friday, 5:30 p.m. girls and 7 p.m. boys 

Why Go: Support two local boys varsity basketball teams and two local girls basketball teams in their quest for athletic glory! And maybe one of your own kids will be inspired! 

Pricing:  Free 

• MONARCH BUTTERFLY WALK 

Where/When: , Highway 1, Moss Landing, Saturday or Sunday at 11 a.m. 

Why Go: A  docent naturalist will take you on a tour of a state-designated insect preserve. Thousands of monarch butterflies are return each fall to one of the larger over-wintering sites in the United States. You will learn the story of this beautiful creature and its fascinating seasonal migration.

• SUNDAY FAMILY FUN CRAFTS 

Where/When: Live Oak Branch, Santa Cruz Public Library, 2380 Portola Dr., Sunday, 1-4 p.m.

Why go: Don't make your arts and crafts mess at home. Do it at the library. And do your project in the company of others. Definitely more fun. All are welcome to drop in for some free arts and crafts projects with the library staff. Materials will be provided.
