Grab and Go Kids Planner: Gardening, Chess, a Festival and a Brass Ring

Head out to the community garden, check out the Strawberry Festival, play chess, attend a teen council meeting or grab the brass ring on the boardwalk carousel; our suggestions for this week's Kids Planner.

Where/When: , 1147 E Cliff Drive, Friday, 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Why Go: Doing some of your own gardening — and doing it as a family can be a lot of fun. Try growing together at this community garden and enjoy a pot luck lunch first as well with seasonal food and drink from the garden; served at 12:30 p.m.  Volunteer hours are 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. this Friday and every other Friday.

Pricing: Free

Where/When: , 224 Church St., Saturday, 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Why Go: If you are a teen who likes to be involved with your community, you might want to think about becoming involved with the Advisory Council of Teens at the library.  The council is made up of teens aged 12 to 18 who are interested in what the library can do for Santa Cruz County teens. This is a great way to get involved and with summer coming, you may have the time.

Pricing: Free

Where/When:, 303 Walnut Ave. Saturday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Why Go: Carnival games, bouncy houses, a dunk tank and more. And food galore — Mexican, BBQ, Veggie and of course strawberries, strawberries and more strawberries presented in all kinds of ways — shortcake, crepes, chocolate dipped and more.

Why Go: Chess Club at the Library is for students up to 18 years old. Instruction is given by Gjon Feinstein on the 2nd, 3rd and 4th Sundays of each month. So if the students get some instruction today, they will be ready to take on their parents on the chess board the fourth Sunday in June — which is Family Chess Day at the same time.

Pricing: Free

Where/When: Santa Cruz Beach Board, 400 Beach St.; All day, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday

Why Go: If you are going to be at the beach, let your kids try for the brass ring on the carousel. The brass ring is out there to celebrate the ride's 100th birthday, so there will be a limited number of special brass rings mixed in with the rest of the carousel rings each day.  A brass ring can exchanged for a special prize at the new
"Millions of Memories" store or you can just keep the brass ring as a souvenir!

Pricing: Check different admission pricing options on the website.
