James Durbin Stays; Stefano Langone Gone, Gone

Santa Cruz local makes the Final 6 on 'American Idol.'

James Durbin fans—want a head's up and a laugh?

Watch the attached video and look at what these people, who are as far away from us mentally as they are geographically, have to say about our Idol.

At first I thought this Rhode Island newscast was a Saturday Night Live skit. Then I realized I've been in California long enough to forget what it's like back there.

Here you have some Idol "experts" bantering. I'll give them this: They both knew Stefano was going. But they are both "done with" Durbin. I think they are wrong.

They think his choice of song this week, Muse's "Uprising"—which some hailed as his finest moment—was too sophisticated for the "12-13-14 year-olds" who vote in the contest. If they got a look at the people who turn out to support Durbin at Pizza My Heart on 41st Street in Capitola, well, there are few, if any, youngsters there.

I love this little provincial news analysis (or providential, in this case). It's like they got three people off the street to talk about the show on their way home from their jobs at the mall

The host says the category of 21st century music is "kind of vague." Sorry, but that's pretty specific: music of the last 10 years. (There are three kinds of people in the world. Those who can do math and those who can't.)

At least the DJ has a local tie. Her last name is Cruz, and she did correctly pick the tonight's loser. The guy, well, he must cover sports, right? High school sports? He thinks James needs to get a little more "current" in his choice of songs. Dude, songs of the last decade. Top of the charts, 2010. How much more current is there? Maybe he should cover Cee-lo's latest "---- You" bleeps and all?

And the host was "scared" watching Durbin. Too "screamy screechy." Funny, I was thinking the same of her.

Well, at least Rhode Island's electoral votes won't have much effect on this race. The whole state's population barely fits on our Boardwalk.
