James Durbin to Play the Beach Boardwalk May 19

Durbin drew 20,000 to the Santa Cruz park last year and will open the season this year.

Does anyone remember who actually won American Idol last year?

Me neither. Because for my money, it was James Durbin, who will open the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk's summer season on May 19 with a free concert.

The last time he played the Boardwalk was last year on what was called "James Durbin Day" which was celebrated all over Santa Cruz and featured a parade, press conference at the Loudin Nelson Center and only a few songs by Durbin on the outdoor stage. He placed fourth on Idol, but is already ahead of the pack.

This year he will sing for an hour, running through songs on his album "Memories of a Beautiful Disaster," which is No. 36 on the Billboard Top 200 chart.

Not a disaster at all.
