James Durbin Still in Contention

UPDATE: Durbin hangs on to the Top 11 after Wednesday voting. Karen Rodriguez sent home. The show resumes next Wednesday and Thursday.

The American Idol assignment this week was to sing something from the year the singer was born. James Durbin picked Bon Jovi's "I'll Be There For You," a tepid, poppy tune, compared with other contestants, who pulled out Nirvana and Melissa Etheridge.

Judge Steven Tyler, singer for Aerosmith, had a few hits the same year, including "Love in an Elevator," "Janie's Got a Gun" and "F.I.N.E."

Tyler, a genuine rocker in his day, warned James, "Don't get too poppy on me" and said he'd be glad to do a duet with Durbin if the Santa Cruz singer does an Aerosmith song in the finale.

During Wednesday's show, Durbin's mother talked about him having a doll, and producer Jimmy Iovine discussed how many of the Idols staying in a mansion together were coming down with colds. Let the karaoke continue.

Many of the songs by the finalists, including Durbin, were pitchy. In other words, off key on more than a few notes. What do you think? Watch the video and give us your score.
