Math Meets Dance Saturday & Sunday at West End Studio Theatre in Santa Cruz

Two performances of "The Daughters of Hypatia: Circles of Mathematical Women" are on April 12, with a matinee on April 13.

"The Daughters of Hypatia: Circles of Mathematical Women," a dance concert about history's great women mathematicians and their struggles to create groundbreaking mathematics, will be performed at West End Studio Theatre in Santa Cruz on Saturday and Sunday, April 12 and 13.

Women’s contributions to mathematics have historically been given short shrift, so mathematician and dancer/choreographer Karl Schaffer highlights these contributions in a concert dedicated to the foremothers of mathematics, as well as to their leading contemporaries.

New dance work will also make use of live projection of video mosaics of dancers with software created by Kevin Lee, feature tessellation designs by Marjorie Rice, include guest choreography by sarah-marie belcastro, and use musical compositions by Zambra, Vi Hart, and Victor Spiegel.

Dancers performing in the show are: Jane Real; Saki; Lila Salhov; and Laurel Shastri.

Tickets: Hypatia.TicketLeap.com. Advance tickets are $15 general, $12 seniors and students, $9 children under 12, $2 more if purchased at the door.

Performances are sponsored by West End Studio Theatre, funded in part by a grant from the Arts Council Santa Cruz County.
