Three Big Names Play Small Clubs this Week

Jackie Green, 7 Walkers and Chris Robinson, of the Black Crowes give Santa Cruz more music than they could hope for.

Santa Cruz has a surprising trio of big names this week doing week night shows. It's hard to imagine another city of 59,000 people with this much talent playing on school nights.

Eclectic folk rocker Jackie Greene plays Tuesday at the Kuumbwa Jazz Center. No, he hasn't added another genre, but he is playing one of the smallest houses he ever plays, with only 200 seats.

Showtime is 7 p.m. and tickets are sold out, sadly enough. But you never know. You can usually pick one up outside.

Wednesday Black Crowe Chris Robinson brings his new band to Don Quixote's in Felton, as intimate a room as a Crowe ever played. Showtime is 8 p.m. and tickets are $20 at the door. This is one not to miss. He will be the opening act on the J. Geils summer stadium tour.

Friday 7 Walkers play the Rio Theatre. This is the band that includes Bill Kreutzmann of the Grateful Dead, vocalist Papa Mali, bassist George Porter, Jr. of the Meters and multiinstrumentalist Matt Hubbard. Tickets are $23 in advance and $27 at the door. Showtime is 8 p.m.
