Update: Mountain Lion Stuck in Santa Cruz's Branciforte Creek

Santa Cruz police are monitoring the trapped animal, media reports.

Update, 10 a.m.:
Santa Cruz police may attempt to drive a mountain lion out of the aqueduct it's trapped in, Deputy Police Chief Steve Clark told Patch.

The big cat is stuck in Branciforte Creek near May Avenue. The creek is a fenced off and flows through a concrete channel in that neighborhood.

It appears that the lion walked past some medical offices and jumped over a fence into the creek. There was fur on the fence. The first report of the mountain lion came from the Ramada Inn, at 516 Water St.

The mountain lion was walking around and trying to get out of the aqueduct earlier in the morning, but as of 10 a.m., appeared to be napping.

Police hope they can rouse the animal and push it upstream, back to the Santa Cruz Mountains, by driving a police cruiser up the creek, Clark said.
