The popular tourist route between Santa Cruz and Cambria will be opened soon with a signal light that will allow one lane of traffic to go over the road that was destroyed a month ago by a cliff-slide.
Until Saturday, only pedestrians were allowed over the impasse, where they could be picked up by buses on both sides. Now cars are allowed from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m., and crews are working in the daytime. According to Caltrans, the route will be open full time by Thursday.
As one wag put it, these next few days are a good time to ride a bicycle on the road without much auto traffic.
