Why Go:  A musical celebration will be held with a special concert in the spirit of Marin Luther King, Jr., Mohandas Gandhi, and Nelson Mandela.

What:  3rd Friday:  Magic

When:  4p.m. – 8p.m.

Where:  Santa Cruz ‘MAH’ Museum of Art & History

Why Go:  Make  potions, wands, and play games.  Why not get caught up in the magic of the night?

Cost:  $5 general, $3 students, seniors, & kids, Free for MAH members & children under 4



What:  Incredibly Handsome Comedians

When:  8p.m., doors open at 7:30p.m.

Where:  Kuumbwa Jazz Center

Why Go:  Comedian Tim Lee who has been featured in the New York Times, Monty Franklin, an Australian native TV star, and Andrew Norelli, who has performed on ‘The Late Show with David Letterman,’ will be sure to make you laugh as well as look good.

Cost:  $25 general, $35 reserved seating




What:  Passport Days 2014

When:  11a.m. – 5p.m.

Where:  Various Wineries

Why Go:  Thirty plus wineries around Santa Cruz County not normally open to the public will host this event complete with artisan wines, crafts, delicacies, and music.

What:  Families in Nature:  Winter Wonderland with Santa Cruz Museum of Natural History

When:  5p.m. – 7:30p.m.

Where:  Moore Creek Preserve

Why Go:  This twilight walk at Moore Creek Preserve includes nocturnal animal tracking, sensory activities, observation, and of course stargazing!

Cost:  $5 members, $10 general



What:  Winter Wildflower Walk

When:  10 a.m.

Where:  Meet at Big Basin Park Headquarters

Why Go:  Join Docent Scott Peden and learn to identify many of Big Basin’s flowering plants.  Two Chimney trees and a waterfall will also be included on this leisurely four mile walk.  Can’t make it Saturday?  There will be a similar but slightly longer hike Sunday, same time!

Cost:  Free, $10 parking


What:  The Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Gospel Night

When:  7 p.m.

Where:  Resource Center for Non-Violence

Why Go:  Celebrate MLK, Jr. with an evening of local soloists and choirs, including inspirational songs featuring Inner Light Choir, the Santa Cruz Community Choir, Progressive Missionary Baptist Church Choir, and more!  Seating is limited so come early.

Cost:  $10-$20 sliding scale, available at the door.

What:  Youth Day

When:  2p.m. – 5p.m.

Where:  Resource Center for Non-Violence

Why Go:  “A Song for Coretta,” a performance by the UCSC’s Rainbow Theater, is a “sharp” comedy that has a message for youth of all ages.  There will also be a hands-on theater workshop.

Cost:  Free

Sponsored by the NAACP and RCNV (Resource Center for Non-Violence).


What:  7th Annual UCSC Women’s Club Chocolate Festival

When:  1p.m. – 4p.m.

Where:  The Cocoanut Grove

Why Go:  Truffles, cupcakes, and everything chocolate will be complimented by wine tasting at this fun event.  Don’t miss the silent auction!

What:  Critter Crafts

When:  12p.m. – 4p.m.

Where:  Rancho del Oso Nature and History Center

Why Go:   All children are welcome to participate in the make and take activity of nature themed-crafts. 

Cost:  Free



What:  Drop In Family Craft – Papel Picado at the Santa Cruz Mission

When:  1p.m. – 4p.m.

Where:  The Santa Cruz Mission State Historic Park

Why Go:  Create colorful cut paper flags with the family in the sunshine at the Santa Cruz State Mission Historic park.

Cost:  Free


What:  Booker T. Jones

When:  7p.m. & 9p.m.

Where:  Kuumbwa Jazz Center

Why Go:  This Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award recipient will debut his latest CD.  If you love soul, you’ll not want to miss this.
