Santa Cruz Open Streets, Monarchs, and the MAH this Weekend

                                    Friday……

What:  6th Annual Farm to Table Wine Dinners

When:  6p.m. (Reception), 6:30p.m. (Dinner begins)

Where:  Chaminade Resort & Spa

What:   Santa Cruz is in the Heart Volume 11 Book Launch

When:  6:30p.m. – 8p.m.

Where:  Santa Cruz Museum of Art & History

Why Go:  Local historian Geoffrey Dunn will be on site during an exhibition of his book, “Santa Cruz is in the Heart.”  Meet the author and discover the surprising histories, heroes, and villains of the Santa Cruz Community.

What:  Oktoberfest & Benefit Concert with Grind Out Hunger

When:  3p.m. – 6p.m.

Where:  Palm Deli, Aptos

Why Go:   Seven kid bands will perform at this Oktoberfest event and home-brewed root beer, sausages, and micro-brews will be provided.  Proceeds to this benefit concert support  the “Be Natural Scholarship Foundation,’which provides financial assistance to kids in the music program and ‘Grind Out Hunger. ‘  Raffle tickets are available at:  http://benaturalmusicsantacruz.com/2013/09/oktoberfest-oct-12/

Cost:  $3/individual, Free under three

 

What:  Sugar Skulls:  A family Art Workshop

When:  2 sessions (1p.m. – 2:30p.m.) and (3p.m. – 4:30p.m.)

Where:  Santa Cruz Museum of Art & History

Why Go:  Celebrate Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) with the family while creating sugary sculptures of Mexican folk art that honors those that have passed.

Cost:  $10/general, $5/MAH members

What:  The 2nd Annual Santa Cruz Open Streets

When:  9a.m. – 2p.m.

Where:  West Cliff Dr. (from Lighthouse Field to Natural Bridges State Park)

Why Go:  No need to worry about cars during this event while riding bikes, skating, or playing in the street.  A large stretch of West Cliff Drive will be blocked off for musical performances, food trucks, and free activities like Zumba and hula hooping.  It’s a party in the street that’s fun for the whole family.  The goal, “Santa Cruz Open Streets fosters individual and community health through creative use of public space.” http://scopenstreets.org/

What:  Welcome Back Monarchs Day at Natural Bridges State Beach

When:  10a.m. – 4p.m.

Where:  Natural Bridges State Beach

Why Go:  Welcome back the Monarchs at this event as they return to their winter habitat.  A performance by the 5M’s(mostly mediocre musical monarch mariposas), arts and crafts, butterfly garden tips, and plenty of hand–cranked monarch ice cream will sweeten the day.  http://www.parks.ca.gov/Events/EventDetail.aspx?id=4044
