What:  The Arboretum’s 29th Annual Gift & Wreath Sale and Norrie’s Open House!

Why Go:  Named among the best gift shops in the county by the Santa Cruz Weekly readers, Norrie’s Holiday open house is sure to be a quick way to snap you into the spirit of the season with hot chocolate, broths, and baked goods.  Wreaths made from natural materials and dried flowers are also a cool way to jazz up your holiday home or try succulent topped pumpkins for the dinner table that easily transition to the garden.  All proceeds benefit the Arboretum’s conservation and educational programs.

What:  City Celebrates Westside New Bicycle Pump Track Opening

When:  3p.m.

Where:  100 Western Dr. near Hwy. 1

Why Go:  Join Mayor Hilary Bryant and the City of Santa Cruz in the celebration of the opening of the new 5,000 square foot bike track built by over 40 volunteers under the direction of the City of Santa Cruz Parks and Recreation Department.  It was designed to introduce families to the sport of off-road mountain biking in a easily accessible, controlled environment on property donated by the Ow Family.  Don’t miss this ride!

 

What:  Fungus Foray

When:  10a.m. – 1p.m.

Where:  Quail Hollow Ranch County Park

Why Go:  Learn to identify mushrooms in their habitat and the conditions in which they thrive.  This adventurous hike will be led by the Fungus Federation of Santa Cruz and will take place along the trails of Quail Hollow Ranch.  The complete event includes a cooked mushroom picnic.  Dress for possible wet weather!

Cost:  Free.  Group size is limited; call 335-9348 to sign –up.

What:  Tours of the Monarch Grove

When:  11a.m. & 2p.m. (Sat. & Sun.)

Where:  Natural Bridges State Park

Why Go:  Learn about the fascinating seasonal migration of the Monarch Butterflies.

What:  Redwood Loop Trail Naturalist Guided Walk

When:  11a.m. & 2p.m. (Sat. & Sun)

Where:  Big Basin Headquarters

Why Go:  This is an easy hike for the whole family in California’s oldest state park.  Learn about the animals of the forest, redwood reproduction, and other fascinating stories.  See for yourself the chimney and animal trees, mother of the forest, father of the forest, and much more.  The ½ mile loop is stroller and wheelchair accessible.

What:  Santa Cruz Warriors vs. Austin Toros
