Dumpster Fire Doused in Santa Cruz

Smoke from the fire damaged the kitchen area of an adjacent building.

Santa Cruz firefighters on Sunday doused flames coming from a dumpster near a commercial building on Front Street near Soquel Avenue.

When firefighters arrived at the scene, shortly after 3 p.m., they found recycling containers and cardboard burning inside the dumpster behind the one-story building.

A hose line was extended to the rear and firefighters started to extinguish the fire as the rear window broke out. The exterior fire was extinguished while crews made access to the structure and confirmed that the fire had not gone into the building.

However, the building’s interior sustained smoke damage to the kitchen area. After fire investigators completed their initial reports, the building was turned over to the business owners.

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
