Teen Kitchen Project Celebrates One Year with a Dinner on the Farm

Teen Kitchen Project has taken root! Founded just over one year ago, Teen Kitchen Project brings young people into the kitchen to learn to cook delicious and nourishing food. The meals they prepare are delivered free of charge to individuals and families who are in crisis due to a life-threatening illness like cancer. 75 local teen volunteers have given 800 hours and the organization has served 51 individuals and families over 5,300 meals! Teen Kitchen Project has achieved this remarkable success in such a short time through the outstanding support and generosity of individuals, organizations and businesses in the local Santa Cruz area community.

To celebrate its one year anniversary and to honor its contributors, Teen Kitchen Project is presenting Taking Root! A Farm Dinner on Saturday, October 5, 2013, from 5 - 8:00pm at Live Earth Farm. The public is invited to come to the dinner and enjoy locally grown fresh fare amidst the beautiful Corralitos hills. Chef Jonathan Miller, who has been cooking for over 15 years for private clients in the Monterey Bay and Silicon Valley areas, designed the menu. He specializes in healthful, family oriented cuisine. Mariquita and Live Earth Farms are donating fresh, local ingredients. Tickets are $100 per person and include a family-style, multi-course meal, beer and wine.

Teen Kitchen Project was founded by local teacher and parent, Angela Farley. In 2011 her youngest son was diagnosed with a rare lung cancer. She supported her son through surgeries and chemotherapy with love, patience, and hope. After treatment ended (her son has a good prognosis), she vowed to help others still on their cancer journey by finding a way to give them nourishing, delicious food, and to lessen the isolation they may feel when in treatment by connecting them with their community. After spending a week in training at the Ceres Community Project in Sebastopol, Angela learned how to emulate the Ceres model and went on to gather a team of committed volunteers, including Executive Chef Stephanie Forbes, Kitchen Manager Kimber Ashley, Advancement Coordinators Cindy Estrada Hess and Lara Kilpatrick, and a group of dedicated adult mentor chefs and Delivery Angels, to create the Teen Kitchen Project in Santa Cruz. Teen Kitchen Project is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization under the umbrella of the Boomerang Foundation.
