Blog: New Videos Help Inform Voters

Santa Cruz County Elections posts entertaining and informative videos to inform voters about the Top Two Primary and How to Request a Ballot by Mail.

Imagine Abe Lincoln and George Washington explaining the new Top Two Primary in California. Or learning how to apply for a vote-by-mail ballot from a baby.

Thanks to some creative media folks, Santa Cruz County Elections has posted two new public service announcements that do exactly that.  The videos are posted on the County Elections website at www.votescount.com and on YouTube.

In one video a baby in a crib explains about a “hot new tip” he found for mom while checking on his investments. He goes on to explain how to go online to www.votescount.com to apply for a ballot or simply mail in the vote-by-mail application. He describes the convenience of having the ballot mailed to your home so you can vote it “without having to leave your crib.”

“No standing in line like a votersarus,” he says. The video ends with the tag line, “Vote by mail. So simple, a baby could do it.” http://bit.ly/babyVBM

The second video features Abe Lincoln expressing his confusion over California’s new Top Two Primary law. George Washington tells him that “It’s as simple as whistling with wooden teeth.”

President Washington explains that in the June Primary voters will get to vote for any candidate regardless of their political party registration. He explains that the top two vote-getters, regardless of party, go on to the November run-off. The Top Two Primary rules do not apply to the Office of US President, which continues to nominate a candidate by party for the November run-off.

“You mean I can vote for a Democrat,” President Lincoln asks, “even though I am a registered Republican?” President Washington confirms that is the case, except for the Office of President. The PSA ends with, “The Top-Two Primary. So easy, a President could do it.” http://bit.ly/PresT2

“We are always looking for new and creative ways to connect with voters,” County Clerk Gail L. Pellerin said. “I hope voters find these videos entertaining and informative.”
