'Day on Beach' For Folks With Disabilities Set July 19 at Cowell; Volunteers Needed!

Shared Adventures of Santa Cruz announces the 22nd Annual "Day On The Beach" event on Cowell Beach in Santa Cruz, Saturday, July 19 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The non-profit organization is dedicated to improving the quality of life of people living with disabilities. Shared Adventures is celebrating their 20th anniversary in 2014.

This “family-friendly” event creates an opportunity for those who, due to their disabilities, might never have the opportunity to participate in ocean sports such as kayaking, outrigger canoeing, scuba diving, water floatation, and beach wheelchair rides.

In order to enable those with mobility issues to travel over the sand to activities and create a unique 7,600-plus-square-foot event on the beach, generous volunteers lay down more than 200 pieces of plywood frames.

This event will serve more than 300 persons with disabilities, plus their caregivers, friends and families, for this spectacular beach party where participants are expected to take 80 kayak trips, 60 outrigger trips, 40 scuba diving dips, 20 floatation excursions and 25 beach wheelchair rides.

Ocean sports will be provided to participants by the generosity of the Kayak Connection, Outrigger Santa Cruz and Aqua Safaris.

Foster Anderson, Founder and Executive Director of Shared Adventures said, “This is one of the most incredible events. We get people with special needs and folks that have expertise in ocean sports together to do something that is very special.”

Community involvement is the key to this event’s success; hundreds of volunteers are needed and are requested to pre-register online at www.SharedAdventures.org.
