Anna Jean Cummings Park Disc Golf Proposal

Parks and Recreation staff weigh in on a proposal for a disc golf course at Anna Jean Cummings Park.

The Santa Cruz County Parks and Recreation Commission will meet at Simpkins Swim Center, April 15, from 7 to 9 PM, to hear the Parks and Recreation Department staff report, and possibly vote on two proposals for Anna Jean Cummings Park open space. Click HERE for the agenda for this meeting (Available April 11).

A disc golf club at Soquel High School has proposed a 7-acre disc golf course to be built in the southern-most open space area of Anna Jean Cummings Park. The development will consist of 9 “holes,” tall poles with chain baskets, and a system of trails connecting the holes. Disc golf players throw a small weighted “Frisbee” toward the holes.

Disc golf developments in other Santa Cruz County Parks, De Laveaga and Pinto Lakes, have demonstrated that this activity contributes to significant environmental damage on the course, including injuries to trees, trampling of vegetation at the sides of the course and single use domination of the area during its use. Due to the intensity of this activity, wildlife are chased from the area during its use and significant habitat is compromised.

Friends of Anna Jean Cummings Park have testified in opposition to this development at Parks and Recreation Commission meetings in the past. Their website contains details of their objections and an online petition, as well as a concise history of Anna Jean Cummings Park..

Open space in Santa Cruz County’s urban areas is increasingly threatened by recreational development. Preserving open space and natural habitat requires active participation in the political process.
