Santa Cruz School Girls Strut Their Late Summer Style

Female students of Santa Cruz show off their casual September fashions: giant bell bottoms, vintage purses, lace, and high wasted denim.

Lauren Robuck:

With so much fuss being made in the fashion world about skinny jeans, it's refreshing to see a girl rocking giant bell-bottoms. Lauren told me the flowing pants hail from India, and that she made a lot of her turquoise jewelry herself. Her clutch, which is covered in small beads that form an American flag, is vintage.

"My mom actually owns an antique store, so I am very much a local shopper. I like shopping at places that are ma and pa...I definitely love Moon Zoom, and there's a really good Goodwill around here. I like that kind of stuff.

Tlayeli Garcia:

Lace is popping up more and more these days outside of the realm of undergarments, and I for one applaud those who have tastefully adopted this trend into their wardrobes. Tlayeli is doing an excellent job of keeping it classy in her lace top from Goodwill. The lace bralette from Urban Outfitters that she paired it with is delicate enough to not look trashy under the transparent shirt. And the wispy top still comes off as casual when worn with jeans (Urban Outfitters), and sturdy boots (Steve Madden).

The 19-year-old told me that her favorite place to shop was at her work, Urban Outfitters, "Because I get discount"

Caiti Hendrix:

Locals often joke about how the best weather comes after all the tourists leave, and Caiti's mid-September ensemble is proof of our unseasonably nice autumns. The pale colors in this outfit complement each other, and I love how they look in the bright sun. Her top was a gift, and her shorts are from Urban Outfitters. Ms. Hendrix was however, most proud of her shoes, which she snagged for one dollar and fifty cents at The Salvation Army.

Summer Noble:

The dolphins on Summer's shirt caught my eye right away, and when I noticed that they were leaping out from a bed of crystals, she had my full attention.

"[This shirt] belongs to a friend of mine. He got it at a maternity store, and that's why it hangs so limply. He saw it years ago in the front window. and loved the picture so much he just had to get it"

Her shorts, which were pants when purchased at Goodwill, belong to the same lucky friend who lent her the shirt. Her cream colored belt is from American Apparel, and so are her sandals.

Summer loves to shop at thrift stores, and she offered up some advice for those who want to start doing the same.

"Give yourself adequate time, because sifting, you know, it takes time. But you can really find some amazing gems under stuff that looks like crap"

Blake Murphy:

High waisted denim is really popular right now, and Blake's shorts are a splendid example of this warm weather trend. The jeans, turned cut-offs were purchased at Goodwill, and look really cute with her multi-colored striped belt, also a thrift store find. Her shirt is from American Apparel, her shoes are from Vans, and her cardigan was purchased at Urban Outfitters.

Blake's favorite places to shop are local thrift shops, one of her favorites being Crossroads.

"There's a lot of things that you buy at thrift stores that don't look that cute, but you can make them a lot better"

Once upon a time the world's greatest R & R band....now....well, let's just say the Stones areRead More another sad example of what happens when greed trumps musicianship and respect for fans....

I like the sound of James' new music and believe he has shown significant growth between his debutRead More album and his second. But to say he was "the real winner of his season of 'American Idol'" is disingenuous. He faltered down the stretch compared to the other finalists.

He is such an attractive and lovely young man, tho I am old enough to be his grandmother I stillRead More feel so passionate about James Durbin and his sexy hair and rock music. Makes me feel young again!

This show was exceptional, James is a natural on stage and shines with the brightest stars. I amRead More proud to say I was hooked and reeled in from the first notes sang during Idol auditions. As a life long lover of a variety of music I can safely say I see nothing but great things in this young man's future. He had me first as a singer, soon thereafter as a performer and now as James DURBIN, singer, song writer, performer and artist. He continues to grow and push himself toward stardom and I am proud to be Right Behind him all the way.

Sounds like a great book. I read Hoffman's own book, LSD My Problem Child, and really enjoyed whatRead More he had to say. What a long and fruitful life he had! Everyone whose life has been changed by LSD has this man, and a set of fortuitous circumstances in a Sandoz lab, to thank. (Everyone else has irrational drug policy and Puritanical social attitudes to thank.) I think the current revival of psychedelic studies does honor Hoffman's memory. Finally, something other than irrational prohibition! www.psychedelicfrontier.com

Thanks to Albert Hoffman, for this truly wondrous medicine. Though its hard to imagine such aRead More momentous discovery was purely by chance. The mid-40's was also marked by the Manhattan Project - splitting the atom, and turning the primal energy of the universe into a weapon - as well as the first programmable electronic computers. On the verge of planetary destruction, a Swiss chemist finds a substance that reliably engenders a deeply spiritual experience, of the sacred unity of all existence. It was if Spirit spoke to us in the only language we could hear - that of Science, and something made in a lab - to reveal what was always there within us. And just in time, to save us from ourselves.
