Aptos Man, 26, Arrested for DUI in Sunday's Fiery Highway 1 Crash

A man who drove his 2001 Mitsubishi into the back of a Chevrolet and injured two people Sunday morning on Highway 1 was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence.

CHP officers said David Fairbanks, 26, smashed his car into the back of a 1995 Chevrolet driven by Hy Nguyen, 71, of San Jose while both were heading south on Highway 1 at 7:17 a.m. by the Market Street overpass. The accident closed southbound lanes for an hour.

The Chevrolet driver suffered minor injuries, but two passengers in the Mitsubishi had to be taken to hospitals. Front seat passenger Karina Orendaycuevas, 26, of Aptos, was taken to Valley Medical Center with serious injuries. Momen Abdallahbassio, 29, who was sitting in the back seat, was taken to Dominican Hospital.
