Arrests Up Despite Smaller Crowd New Year's Eve

Most of the arrests Santa Cruz Police made Monday were for public intoxication.

Santa Cruz Police arrested 22 people New Year's Eve, 21 of them for alcohol. There was one arrest for possession of narcotics and 31 citations issued, 24 of them were triple fines for possession of alcohol.

The crowd celebrating downtown by the Clock Tower was estimated to be 7,000, down from the 9,000 there in 2011, according to Deputy Chief Steve Clark.

In 2011 police arrested 15 people and issued 24 citations.

There were no arrests made at the impromptu parade staged at 5:30 p.m., despite the fact that organizers didn't have a permit.
