An 18-year-old Santa Cruz man, wanted for suspicion of attempted murder, was stopped Thursday for a traffic violation and battled and injured the officer attempting to take him into custody, according to police.

Stopped at 10:30 p.m. on the 100 block of Trinity Street in his Honda Accord, Jose Xilonzochilt allegedly gave a false name to the traffic officer, said the Santa Cruz Police Department.

The officer, however, recognized Xilonzochilt from a police bulletin as a wanted suspect for an attempted homicide from May 19, police said.

As the Santa Cruz cop attempted to take Xilonzochilt into custody, the suspect reportedly became violent -- even trying to grab the officer’s handgun from his holster, police said.

A second officer assisted and used a Taser to subdue Xilonzochilt, who was arrested and also allegedly found to be in possession of suspected methamphetamine and heroin, police said.

The first officer injured in the fracas is a 12-year department veteran and was treated for his injuries at Dominican Hospital, police said.

The attempted homicide case, in which Xilonzochilt is a suspect, involved a shooting that occurred May 19 near Third and Raymond streets where four San Jose residents were shot at following a confrontation in the Beach Flats neighborhood.

Police said the confrontation erupted over non-specific territorial gang tensions between Norteno gang members, who claim the color red and number 14, and the Surenos, who prefer blue and the number 13.

Xilonzochilt was identified as shooting one from the San Jose group, a 20-year-old pregnant female, who was struck by one of the rounds and sustained non-life threatening injuries.

Xilonzochilt, allegedly, is a Beach Flats Sureno gang member, according to the police department, and has a history of gang-related arrests.

Xilonzochilt was booked into jail on multiple felony charges, including suspicion of attempted homicide, possession of narcotics, resisting arrest, attempting to take an officer’s firearm and participation in a criminal street gang, police said.

Johnny- There's nothing in the article that indicates the accused immigrated across any border.

Curtis Swain: There's plenty to indicate he might have.
