Bicyclist Suffers Major Injuries In Solo Crash

A bicyclist suffered major injuries Friday after he lost control and went over the handlebars.

A bicyclist suffered major injuries Friday after he lost control and went over the handlebars while not wearing a helmet, Santa Cruz police said.

The crash occurred just before 8 p.m. on Walnut Avenue at California Street. The bicyclist was riding south on Walnut Avenue when he lost control and went over his handlebars, hitting the road, police said.

While there was a truck that turned west on to California from northbound Walnut just before the accident, it did not hit the bicycle. The bicyclist was not wearing a helmet and did not have a light.

He suffered major injuries and was flown to an out-of-county trauma center, police said.

Anyone with additional information on this incident is asked to contact police at (831) 420-5862.

Ouch. That sucks. I've had some bad falls, too. What I don't understand is the "out of county trauma center" thing. I keep seeing this when I read about people getting hurt in town. I think it's another example of crazy medical costs making people broke. I was in a serious accident some years ago, and I was taken to Dominican, here in town. They were awesome there. I nearly lost my hand, and they saved it. To this day, I bow down before the wonderful people there who cared for me so well. From the surgeon who put my pieces back together, to the nurses who did everything else. I guess I'm just confused. Why do people need expensive helicopter rides out of town when there's great care right here? And if the care here isn't good enough, can't we improve things? It seems like that would be cheap compared to the choppers. I've heard that the leading cause of bankruptcy these days is outstanding medical bills. I get it. I've seen my bills. Thank goodness I've had insurance. But it's not cool. Really. I don't see any effort to keep costs down for everyone, the insurance companies included. That would be another good step towards health-care reform. And thanks again to you beautiful people at Dominican. You made a horrible injury sort-of okay.

Thanks for that. It clears things up a bit for me.
