Boy, 15, Arrested for Car Theft, Hit and Run After Crashing into Safeway

Police chased the white pickup until it crashed into a home.

Santa Cruz Police Tuesday arrested a 15-year-old who had reportedly stolen a truck and crashed it into the Mission Street Safeway and a traffic signal pole.

Police got the call at 10:10 p.m. from witnesses and began to search the area. They got another call that a truck hit a garage door on Sunnyslope Avenue, off Escalona,  and was stuck.

Santa Cruz Police with dogs, aided by USCS Police and the California Highway Patrol searched for the driver, when they spotted another pickup driving on Escalona with its lights off. They began to follow, and that truck crashed into a yard at High and Spring streets. Police grabbed the driver, who they said had stolen the second truck while they were seaching for him.
